A gun case or bag has one job most people underrate until it fails: keeping the firearm protected, secured, and easy to identify in the field, at the range, or in transit. Hard case vs. soft case

Hard cases (typically foam-lined, with latches and often a lock point) offer the most protection against drops, crushing, and rough handling — the right call for air travel, long-distance transport, or storage in a vehicle. Soft cases and range bags are lighter, easier to carry, and better suited to day-to-day range trips where the firearm isn't being checked as luggage or thrown in a truck bed. If you fly with a firearm, check your airline's specific case requirements before you buy — most require a hard-sided, lockable case regardless of what TSA itself technically permits.

Sizing it to your firearm

A case that's too large lets the firearm shift and bang around inside during transport, which defeats the purpose of the padding. Measure your firearm (barrel length included, for rifles and shotguns) against the case's interior dimensions rather than assuming a "rifle case" fits any rifle — an AR pistol, a bolt-action hunting rifle, and a break-action shotgun all have very different footprints. For handguns, many cases are cut with customizable foam so one case can be trimmed to fit different models.

Range bags: organization matters more than size

A good range bag isn't just a big empty pocket — look for dedicated magazine pouches, a separate compartment for ear/eye protection, and a section that keeps ammo away from anything you don't want oil or lead residue touching. Backpack-style range bags spread weight better than shoulder bags if you're carrying a full loadout (multiple firearms, ammo, gear) any real distance.

Locks and security

If the case will ever be in a vehicle, checked as airline luggage, or stored where others have access, a case with integrated lock points (for your own padlock, sold separately in most cases) is worth the small extra cost over a case with no lock option at all. This is separate from a trigger lock or safe — it's about controlling who can open the case in transit, not long-term storage security.
