OEM vs. aftermarket

OEM (factory) magazines are built to the exact tolerances of the manufacturer's own pistol and are generally the safest default choice, especially for a defensive or duty firearm. Quality aftermarket magazines from established makers (ProMag, Mec-Gar, and others) can match OEM reliability at a lower price and sometimes offer capacity or feature options the factory doesn't — but "aftermarket" also covers a wide quality range, so stick to established manufacturers rather than the cheapest unbranded option available.

Capacity and state law

Magazine capacity is regulated at the state level, and rules vary — some states cap capacity for all magazines, others only restrict what can be sold or transferred going forward while grandfathering existing magazines. Check your state's current magazine capacity law before ordering anything above 10 rounds; this varies too much by state to generalize here, and laws do change.

Feed lips and springs — where reliability actually lives

Most magazine malfunctions trace back to two parts: feed lips (which control how the round is presented to the chamber) and the spring (which loses tension over years of hard use or being stored fully loaded for extended periods). A magazine with bent feed lips or a weak spring will cause failures to feed even in an otherwise perfectly maintained pistol — if you're chasing a malfunction and the gun itself checks out, the magazine is the next place to look.

Base pads and extensions

Extended base pads add one or more rounds of capacity and, on many designs, a slightly larger gripping surface for the pinky finger — useful on compact or subcompact pistols where the stock magazine leaves the little finger unsupported. Confirm the extension is rated for your specific magazine model before buying, since fit varies by generation and manufacturer even within the same pistol line.
