Rifle magazines take more abuse than almost any other piece of gear on the gun — dropped in the dirt, stacked in a range bag, cycled hundreds of times in a session — and a bad one will cause more stoppages than a poorly maintained rifle ever will. Extreme Reloading stocks polymer and metal rifle magazines across popular platforms and calibers, in stock and shipping in 24 hours from a veteran-owned shop.

Polymer vs. metal (aluminum/steel)

Polymer magazines (Magpul's PMAG line being the best-known example) resist denting, are lighter, and often include witness holes or numbered rounds for a quick capacity check. Aluminum magazines are the traditional GI-pattern standard — lightweight and reliable, but more prone to denting the feed lips if dropped hard on a hard surface. Steel magazines (common on AK-pattern rifles) are heavier but extremely durable against rough handling. None of the three is objectively "best" — the right choice depends on platform compatibility and how the magazine will actually be used and stored.

Capacity and state law

Same as pistol magazines: capacity limits are set at the state level and vary — some states cap capacity outright, others grandfather existing magazines while restricting new sales. Check your state's current law before ordering anything above 10 rounds; this changes by state and shouldn't be assumed from general information.

Platform compatibility — don't assume "AR mag" fits every AR

Standard AR-15 pattern magazines are broadly interchangeable across most AR-15-pattern rifles, but AR-10/.308-pattern rifles use a different, larger magazine that is NOT interchangeable with AR-15 magazines despite the similar look — and even within .308-pattern rifles, magazine compatibility can vary by manufacturer (SR-25 pattern vs. others). Confirm your specific rifle's magazine pattern before ordering, especially on a .308 or other larger-caliber AR-platform gun.

Coupling and speed reloads

Magazine couplers (clips that join two magazines side by side or end to end) speed up reloads by keeping a second magazine immediately at hand, oriented for a fast swap. They're a training/competition tool more than a defensive-carry item for most shooters, but worth considering if fast reloads matter for your use case.

Frequently asked questions

Are all AR-15 magazines interchangeable? Standard AR-15 pattern magazines are broadly interchangeable across AR-15-pattern rifles from different manufacturers, but always confirm your specific rifle's magazine well spec, especially on non-standard or proprietary builds.

Can I use an AR-15 magazine in a .308 AR-pattern rifle? No — .308/AR-10-pattern rifles require larger magazines built specifically for that platform; AR-15 magazines will not fit or function in them.

Do polymer magazines wear out faster than metal ones? Quality polymer magazines from established manufacturers are rated for extensive round counts and generally hold up as well as metal magazines under normal use — the bigger factor in magazine longevity is spring fatigue and physical damage from drops, not the body material itself.
